
Irish Dance 101
Céilí
A social event typically with Celtic music and dancing. Céilí dances can
also refer to the grouped or figure dances performed by a combination of
dancers.
Feis or feisanna
A traditional Gaelic arts and culture festival featuring Irish step dance
competition. The correct plural forms are feiseanna
Ghillies
These are the standard shoes worn by female dancers and are used for all
soft shoe dances and figure dances. These soft shoes lace up the front
and around the ankle or lower leg.
Hard shoe dances
Include the Treble Jig, Hornpipe and Traditional Sets
Hard Shoes
These shoes consist of fibreglass, composite or steel tips and heels. The
tips and heels are used to make a rhythmic drumming sound when
performing. Hard shoe dances are typically more difficult to perform and
usually reserved for more advanced dancers.
Soft shoe dances
Include the Reel, Light Jig, Single Jig, and Slip Jig.
