Tara McHugh Boyce, T.C.R.G.
Tara McHugh Boyce began dance lessons at age 3 in Wilmington for the
McAleer School. She briefly danced for another local teacher before
transferring to the world renowned Donny Golden School in New York at
age 9.
From age 9 to 16, Tara commuted weekly and sometimes more often to New
York for lessons. At age 16, with the commute becoming more difficult for
Mrs. McHugh, Tara transferred to the instruction of her sister, Sheila.
Finally after returning from college in Los Angeles in 1993, Tara returned
to the Golden school where she danced until retiring from competition in
1995.
Tara was able to achieve many honors and awards in Irish Dancing. At the
height of her competitive career, Tara was ranked 6th place nationally and
was the 1992 Western Regional Champion. She also competed 5 times at the
World Championships in Ireland – recalling to the final round once.
Tara was also an accomplished performer. Tara toured with the band
Cherish the Ladies and also performed regularly with singer Frank
Patterson, Mick Moloney and Green Fields of America and her husband's
band, Blackthorn. She has performed at Radio City Music Hall in New York,
the Taj Mahal in Atlantic City and at Milwaukee's Irish Fest.
In 1996, Tara passed the intricate T.C.R.G. Exam which certified her to teach
Irish Dancing and she opened the McHugh School of Irish Dance in
Delaware and Pennsylvania. Over the years, she has produced some of the
top-placing regional winners and a world champion competitor.
